Week 1 — Goth Bot
What is Gothic Fiction?
Gothic fiction, sometimes called Gothic horror in the 20th century, is a genre of literature and film that covers horror, death and at times romance. It is said to derive from the English author Horace Walpole’s 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, later subtitled “A Gothic Story”. Early contributors included Clara Reeve, Ann Radcliffe, William Thomas Beckford and Matthew Lewis. It tends to stress emotion and a pleasurable terror that expands the Romantic literature of the time. The common “pleasures” were the sublime, which indescribably “takes us beyond ourselves.” Such extreme Romanticism was popular throughout Europe, especially among English and German-language authors. Its 19th-century success peaked with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and work by E. T. A. Hoffmann, Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens, and in poetry with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Also prominent was the later Dracula by Bram Stoker. The name Gothic spread from the Goths to mean “German”. It also draws in Gothic architecture of the European Middle Ages, where many of the stories occur. Twentieth-century contributors include Daphne du Maurier, Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, Anne Rice and Toni Morrison.
Que in us..
Welcome to our little Machine Learning project. As our project we want to develop a neural network to read and identify spesific literature genres. We have chosen Gothic Literature as our base point.
This project may help us to discern various authors inspirations from each other more clearly. Also it will yield a different point at how we look to literature pieces.
Our Data Sets:
We found three different data sets of various volumes. One is a plain Gothic Literature set with 8 pieces of fundamental Gothic Literature books.
The other two contain a collection of different books whether it is date or genre(including Gothic) which have nearly 1000 books in total. To be honest we didn’t count.
Since books contain a lot of knowledge the need for sets of great sizes are unnecessary(or so we think).
Our Generic Plan:
We will study our datasets and figure out if they can be used the way we want them. Otherwise we will try to find other datasets and if that also fails we will gather them(books individually) ourselves.
Then we will decide on the processing steps we will take. Which algorithm we’ll use, how deep the network will be etc.
Third step is some light coding, figuring out the layout of the system and if things work together.
Later we will do research on our shortcomings and make improvements on our design.
In the last phase we will try to create the models as visioned.
